“The digital transformation of Justice is not only a technological innovation but also an institutional challenge, which can substantially upgrade the quality of Justice and the trust of citizens in it”, stressed during his speech at the presentation of the projects “Teleconferencing Services in Courts and Penitentiary Institutions” and “Electronic Docket – Trial Course Update”, the CEO of the “Information Society SA”, Mr Stavros Asthenidis.
The event was held at the Law Library building on the initiative of the Ministries of Justice, Transparency and Human Rights, Digital Governance and Citizen Protection.
These are two important projects, with a total budget of 16.5 million EUR, implemented through the “Digital Transformation” Programme of the NSRF 2021 – 2027, by the “Information Society SA” (Information Society S.M.S.A.), a body of the Ministry of Digital Governance, which contribute decisively to the digital transformation of the Greek Justice system, in order to further upgrade the quality and speed of the administration of justice.
The introduction of the institution of Teleconferencing in the Courts is a major step forward in terms of security, saving financial and human resources, as well as avoiding unnecessary travel of those involved in a trial before the judicial authorities.
The “Electronic Docket” is also a useful tool for the immediate, real-time information of lawyers and citizens, via the internet and special applications (Apps) on electronic devices (smart phones, tablets and laptops), about the time of the hearing of their case on the day of its adjudication.
The event featured a video with highlights from the first remote interrogation procedure that was recently held at the Athens Court of First Instance, as well as from the first administrative trial that took place at the Administrative Court of First Instance of Patras.
In addition to Mr Asthenidis, the event was also attended and addressed by the Minister of Justice Mr Georgios Floridis, the Minister of Digital Governance, Mr Dimitris Papastergiou, the Deputy Minister for Citizen Protection, Mr Ioannis Lambropoulos and Deputy Minister of Justice, Mr Ioannis Bougas.
The event was attended and spoke about the benefits of the project by Mr Sotiris Tsouvalas, Judge, Athens Court of Appeal – member of the Special Legal Service of the Ministry of Justice, and executives of the contractor company.
