What is the object of the project?
Identification and authentication services are a key building block for the digital transformation of the state and the provision of e-government services to citizens, as well as the strengthening of citizens’ trust in technology and innovation. For this reason, identification and authentication services are a component of quality, integrated and secure provision of eGovernment services. The trend is clear both in Europe and internationally and is moving towards the digitalisation of identity documents. In this context, the European standard eIDAS 2.0, when adopted, will include the introduction of Digital Identity Wallets for the secure storage and sharing of personal and financial information for all EU Member States and will allow EU citizens to securely store and share their personal and financial information across borders, streamlining cross-border transactions and reducing unnecessary bureaucratic procedures.
Since July 2022, the Ministry of Digital Governance has also implemented and made available the “Gov.gr Wallet” mobile application, through which citizens can create and store digital Greek identity cards and digital Greek driving licenses, which can be used by citizens for any legal use in Greece. The objective with this application, which was achieved, was to give citizens the option to issue the digital identity and licence documents in the application and easily present them for verification to any public or private authority they wish, essentially replacing their paper form. In addition, the Ministry enabled the competent auditors to check the validity of the citizen’s digital document in an easy and completely legitimate way using the same application.
What is the purpose of the project?
The main aim of the project is to enhance the digital wallet “Gov.gr Wallet” with new digital services and documents, facilitating the secure and fast interaction between citizens and the State or private entities. Specifically, the implementation of the project is based on the following pillars:
- Strengthening of the digital footprint of services
- One app, many features
- Ease of use
- Data control
- Facilitating the digitisation of services by operators
The following is a description of the main directions for implementing and expanding the existing infrastructure in relation to both the smartphone application and the digital infrastructure and required interoperability (Mobile application, digital server – side back ends, enterprise integration and interoperability):
- Changes to the application to comply with the EUDI Wallet action
- Additional Functionalities of the existing application
- Horizontal Support Services (HSS)
- Facilitation and Support Services (FSS)
