What is the object of the project?

The object of the project consists in using electronic methods to serve interested citizens (parties to a case, witnesses, etc.) with legal documents. Service will be made using a citizen’s electronic mailbox address. As part of this project, thirty-three (33) new types of electronic service will be developed, the scope of which will be defined in the detailed description phase.

What is the purpose of the project?

The purpose of the project consists in serving citizens with the above-mentioned documents via their mailbox, without any involvement of police authorities, thus relieving police staff from this obligation.

Following is a summary of the main objectives of the project:

Objectives for citizens:

  • Easy and immediate information to a citizen via their mailbox concerning documents in criminal cases which are of concern to them.
  • Receipt of documents in criminal cases in digitized form and entry/retention thereof in a citizen’s mailbox.
  • Notification to a citizen by SMS (short message service) and email to alert them to a document that is of concern to them.

Objectives for public sector entities:

  • Innovation and modernization of the methods used to serve citizens with documents (electronic methods).
  • Modernization of the applications used by the public prosecutor’s offices to handle documents in criminal cases.
  • Gradual and significant relief of police staff from the obligation to serve citizens with documents (posting documents on people’s doors).
  • Enabling those Greek public prosecutor’s offices that had not been included in the Integrated System for the Management of Civil and Criminal Court Cases (OSDDY-PP) to use e-service systems for documents in criminal cases and transmit those documents to a citizen’s mailbox.
With a view to serving the needs of all stakeholders faster, templates will be created gradually, starting with those that are at a mature stage and are served in large numbers, in order both to cut down on delivery times and benefit all stakeholders.
What are the expected benefits of the project?

Following are some of the benefits derived from e-service of documents in criminal cases:

  • Saving valuable police time, as police staff will be relieved of this obligation.
  • Saving valuable police time.
  • Speeding up the process of serving citizens with documents due to the use of electronic methods.
  • Secure procedure as citizens are notified (only) of matters concerning them.
  • A citizen may no longer claim that they were not notified (e.g. that the door-posted document was lost).
  • Facilitating the daily work of judicial authorities.
  • Speeding up the overall administration of justice.
