The CEO of Information Technology, Mr. Stavros Asthenidis, highlighted during his participation in the panel of the 9th Delphi Economic Forum 2024 on “Demystifying AI for a more efficient public Sector”, that it is vital to ensure the cooperation among all bodies so as not to waste time and that the digital transformation benefits citizens and businesses.
Stavros Asthenidis, in the debate that took place, primarily referred to the flagship digital reform of Justice through the implementation of five major projects, which are a priority for Information Society and will contribute decisively to speeding up the administration of Justice.
In particular, as regards E-Justice, he stressed that”We have made significant progress so far concerning the projects for the digital transformation of Justice, as €200 million are available after the financing of the Recovery Fund. The timeframes are being followed and I am optimistic that this great reform will be completed by the end of 2025.”
Regarding Artificial Intelligence, which was the main subject of the panel, and its role in the administration of Justice, Mr. Asthenidis stated: “AI will obviously not make decisions, will not replace the natural judge but will be able to help him perform his function. Its use in the administration of justice will be ancillary; namely it will accelerate, inter alia, procedures such as finding the appropriate case-law and records of the trials, and digitizing procedures and paperwork.”
The CEO of Information Society, in the second part of his speech, pointed out the difficulties presented in the training of the human resources of the Public Sector in modern skills of Artificial Intelligence as well as in new technologies. “It is better to talk about targeting education in sectors where AI is used, such as Health, and the use of special tools, rather than horizontally training civil servants,” hesaid.
In his conclusion, Mr. Asthenidis talked about the “digital championship”,recalling a statement by NBA American superstar Michael Jordan. “The great Jordan had said that talent wins games but teamwork wins championships. So, since our goal in Information Society is to win the championship, I would like to point out that in order to ensure a successful outcome of this effort, all bodies and operators should definitely work together so as not to waste time and so that the digital transformation benefits citizens and businesses.
In addition to Mr. Asthenidis, the following persons participated in the panel: Dimitris Papastergiou (Minister for Digital Governance); Christos Tarantilis (Partner and Head of Government and Public Sector at EY (Ernst and Young) Greece); and Ms. Gianna Andronopoulou (CEO of Microsoft in Greece, Cyprus and Malta). The discussion was coordinated by the journalist of the Athens and Macedonian News Agency, Ms. Alexandra Gouta.
